Hamilton Park Racecourse is one of Scotland’s most cherished racing venues. Found in the South of Glasgow, the thoroughbred racetrack is dedicated to flat racing only, hosting an interesting catalogue of events over the course of the UK flat racing season.
Races have been run at Hamilton since as early as 1782, being a venue heavily ingrained in Scottish sporting culture. During its many years in operation, the venue has hosted some noteworthy races and broke numerous records. On the 18th July 1947, Hamilton Park Racecourse became the first venue to host an evening meeting. Then, on the 8th of May 1971, the venue became the first to host a morning meeting. These ‘firsts’ soon became common practice in the UK horse racing industry.
The most notable of the races run at Hamilton Park Racecourse is the Glasgow Stakes. This is a Listed flat horse race that is open to horses of at least three years old, being run over a course of 1 mile, 3 furlongs and 15 yards. This equates to around 2,227 metres. The Glasgow Stakes is famously run every July, being the highlight of the venue’s summer fixtures list.
While initially run at York, the race has now become synonymous with the Glasgow venue, having been hosted by Hamilton Park Racecourse since 2005. The Glasgow Stakes is commonly used as a trial for the Epsom Derby, with Commander in Chief winning both races in 1993. As a result, the event attracts some of the racing industry’s most esteemed horses and jockeys.
Recent winners of the Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton Park Racecourse include Ventura Storm (2016), Defoe (2017), Raymond Tusk (2018), Sameem (2019), Subjectivist (2020) and Aleas (2021).
